Firenze Santa Maria Novella, usually shown as Firenze S. M. Novella or Firenze SMN, is Florence’s main railway station. It is the best station for most visitors because it is right in the city centre, within walking distance of the Duomo and the main sights.

Firenze SMN is served by both high-speed and regional trains.

Direct high-speed trains connect Florence with:

  • Arezzo
  • Prato
  • Pistoia
  • La Spezia

One important detail: not every train to Florence stops at Santa Maria Novella. Some trains use Firenze Campo di Marte or Firenze Rifredi instead. Always check the full station name on your ticket.

How Early Should You Arrive?

For a high-speed train, arriving 20 minutes before departure is usually enough. Allow 30 minutes if you have large luggage, need to buy a ticket or have never used the station before.

Platforms are sometimes announced only shortly before departure. Watch the main departure boards and check your train number, not just the destination. The destination shown on the board may be the train’s final stop rather than the city where you are getting off.

There are ticket checks at the entrance to the platform area, so keep your ticket or QR code ready.

Tickets and Platform Information

Trenitalia and Italo have ticket machines and staffed service points inside the station. High-speed tickets are tied to a specific train and normally include a reserved seat.

If you have a paper ticket for a regional train, check whether it needs to be validated before boarding. For digital tickets, follow the instructions shown in the operator’s app or booking confirmation.

Do not accept help from strangers standing beside ticket machines. If you need assistance, speak to uniformed station staff or visit the official ticket office.

Getting from the Station to Central Florence

Most of central Florence is easy to reach on foot:

  • Santa Maria Novella Church: about 5 minutes
  • Florence Cathedral and the Duomo: about 10–12 minutes
  • Piazza della Signoria: about 15–18 minutes
  • Ponte Vecchio: about 20 minutes

The streets around the station can be busy and uneven, so a taxi may be more comfortable if you have heavy luggage. The official taxi rank is outside the station.

Florence Airport Connection

The T2 tram connects the station area with Florence Airport. Use the Alamanni–Stazione stop, just outside the station. The journey usually takes around 20 minutes.

The tram is generally easier and cheaper than taking a taxi, especially during busy traffic hours.

  • Keep your ticket ready for the platform gates.
  • Stay close to the departure boards until your platform appears.
  • Do not leave phones, wallets or bags unattended.
  • Be careful with pickpockets in the concourse and outside the station.
  • Confirm that your ticket says Firenze Santa Maria Novella, not Campo di Marte or Rifredi.
  • If you have a tight connection, check your next platform before stopping for food or coffee.

Firenze SMN can feel crowded, but it is a straightforward station once you know your train number and platform. Its central location is the biggest advantage: in most cases, you can step off the train and walk directly to your hotel or Florence’s main attractions.
