Trenitalia and Italo are two major high-speed train operators in Italy. Both connect popular cities such as Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, and Naples. However, their services, ticket conditions, and luggage policies are different.

If you're planning a train journey in Italy, here's what you need to know before booking.

1. Trenitalia vs Italo: What's the Difference?

Trenitalia operates high-speed Frecciarossa trains, as well as Intercity and regional services. Italo focuses on high-speed train travel.

Both companies serve major Italian cities, but available routes and departure times vary. When planning your journey, compare the schedules and check which operator runs your preferred train.

Keep in mind that Trenitalia and Italo use separate ticket systems. A ticket purchased for one operator is not automatically valid on the other's trains.

2. Ticket Prices and Fare Types

Train fares depend on your route, travel date, departure time, and ticket type.

Trenitalia offers fare options such as Base and Economy on eligible high-speed services, while Italo offers Low Cost, Economy, and Flex fares.

Before booking, compare not only the ticket price but also the conditions for changes and refunds. A lower fare may come with more restrictions.

3. Refund and Exchange Rules

The rules for changing or cancelling a ticket depend on the fare you've purchased.

Italo's Low Cost, Economy, and Flex fares have different exchange and refund conditions. Trenitalia also applies different rules to its Base and Economy fares.

If your travel plans are uncertain, check the applicable fare conditions before completing your purchase. Additional fees or restrictions may apply.

4. Luggage Allowance

Luggage rules vary between Trenitalia and Italo, so it's worth checking the requirements before your journey.

Trenitalia

Trenitalia does not impose specific size or quantity limits on luggage. However, dangerous, explosive, and flammable items are not permitted.

Italo

Your luggage allowance depends on your travel class.

Smart Class (Second Class)

If you're travelling in Smart Class, your luggage must not exceed 75 × 53 × 30 cm. Luggage should be placed in the designated storage areas, which are monitored by video surveillance.

Other Travel Classes

Passengers travelling in other classes can bring luggage without specific size or quantity restrictions. Large suitcases are permitted on board.

If you're travelling with a large suitcase, Italo's non-Smart classes may offer more flexibility.

5. Can You Use a Trenitalia Ticket on Italo?

No. Trenitalia and Italo are separate train operators, and their tickets cannot be used interchangeably.

6. How to Choose Between Trenitalia and Italo

When comparing trains, consider:

  • Price: Compare fares for your travel date.
  • Schedule: Choose a departure and arrival time that works for you.
  • Journey: Check the travel duration and stops.
  • Ticket flexibility: Review the refund and exchange conditions.
  • Luggage: Make sure your luggage meets the operator's requirements.

Both Trenitalia and Italo can be convenient options for travelling around Italy. The best choice depends on your route, schedule, and ticket preferences.
