Linate Airport to Milan: How to Reach the City Centre and Milano Centrale

Linate Airport to Milan: How to Reach the City Centre and Milano Centrale

Milan Linate Airport (LIN) is much closer to central Milan than Malpensa, which makes getting into the city relatively straightforward. The easiest option for most travellers is the M4 metro, which runs directly from the airport into central Milan.

There is one detail that catches people out, though: Milano Centrale is not the same thing as central Milan.

If your hotel is near San Babila, the Duomo or the historic centre, the M4 can take you most of the way without a complicated transfer. If you are landing at Linate and continuing your trip by train from Milano Centrale, you will need to change metro lines.

Here is how both journeys work.

Linate Airport to Milan: the quick answer

For most travellers, the M4 metro is the simplest way into Milan.

ATM, Milan's public transport operator, says the M4 connects Linate with central Milan in about 12 minutes. The line runs west from the airport through stops including Dateo, San Babila, Sforza Policlinico and Sant'Ambrogio.

Where you get off depends on where you are actually going.

DestinationBest starting option
San Babila / central MilanDirect M4 from Linate
Duomo areaM4 to San Babila, then walk or connect locally
Milano CentraleM4 + metro transfer
Hotel elsewhere in MilanM4, then connect to the nearest metro line
Travelling with heavy luggageMetro or taxi, depending on your final address

The important part is checking the final destination, not simply searching for “Milan centre”.

Going to central Milan? Take the M4

If your accommodation is around San Babila, the Duomo, Montenapoleone or the historic centre, Linate is one of the easiest Milan airports to arrive at.

The M4 Blue Line starts at Linate Aeroporto and runs directly toward the city centre. San Babila is one of its most useful stops for visitors because it sits just east of the Duomo and connects with the M1 Red Line.

For many travellers staying centrally, there is little reason to go to Milano Centrale first.

That sounds obvious, but it is an easy mistake to make when planning from abroad: Milano Centrale is Milan's main railway station, not a generic name for the city centre.

If your hotel is near the Duomo, travelling airport → Centrale → hotel may actually send you out of your way.

M4 metro connection from Linate Airport to Milan

How much does the metro cost?

ATM's standard Mi1–Mi3 ticket costs €2.20 and is valid for 90 minutes. The same ticket can be used for transfers within its validity period, subject to the normal fare rules.

You can also use contactless payment on the ATM network. Each passenger needs their own payment card or device.

Because fares and transport rules can change, check ATM's current information before travelling.

Linate Airport to Milano Centrale

If your real destination is Milano Centrale railway station, the journey is slightly different.

The M4 does not run directly to Centrale FS.

A straightforward route is:

Linate Aeroporto → M4 → Sant'Ambrogio → M2 → Centrale FS

Sant'Ambrogio is an official interchange between the M4 and M2, while Centrale FS is served by the M2 and M3 lines.

This is usually a better way to think about the journey than searching for a direct “Linate Airport to Milano Centrale train”. There is no airport express train equivalent to the Malpensa Express from Linate; the metro network handles the connection.

Allow some extra time for the interchange, particularly if you have suitcases.

If you have never used the station before, our Milano Centrale Train Station guide explains the platform area, departure boards, metro connections and what to expect when you arrive.

Route from Linate Airport to Milano Centrale by metro

Continuing from Milano Centrale by train?

This is where travelling via Centrale makes sense.

Milano Centrale is a major departure point for trains to cities including Rome, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Turin and destinations outside Italy.

If Linate is simply the first step in a longer rail trip, give yourself enough time between landing and your train departure. Immigration, baggage collection, the metro journey and walking through Centrale can all add uncertainty.

Should you take a taxi instead?

The metro is usually the simplest option for central Milan, but a taxi can make more sense in some situations.

For example:

  • you have several large suitcases;
  • you are travelling with children;
  • several people are sharing the ride;
  • your hotel is not close to a convenient metro stop;
  • you arrive when metro service is limited;
  • you need to reach Milano Centrale quickly without changing lines.

Linate is relatively close to the city, so the difference between public transport and a taxi is less dramatic than it can be from Malpensa.

Traffic, however, can change road journey times considerably. If you are connecting to a train, build in a buffer rather than relying on an ideal taxi travel time.

What if you have luggage?

The M4 is designed as a modern metro line and is a practical option with normal travel luggage. ATM's accessibility information shows lifts at Linate Aeroporto, although individual lifts can occasionally be unavailable, so travellers with reduced mobility or very heavy luggage should check live accessibility information before travelling.

For a normal suitcase, the bigger issue is usually the transfer to Centrale, not the ride from the airport itself.

If you are staying in central Milan, the direct M4 journey is relatively simple.

If you need to reach Milano Centrale, you will have to change lines, carry your luggage through the interchange and then navigate the main railway station.

For one person with a manageable suitcase, that is usually fine. With several bags, children or mobility needs, a taxi may be worth considering.

Linate vs Malpensa: don't use the same airport plan

Milan has several airports, and transfer advice is not interchangeable between them.

Linate (LIN) is close to the city and connected directly to Milan's metro network.

Malpensa (MXP) is much farther away and has direct rail services to Milan, including the Malpensa Express.

So if you see advice telling you to take the Malpensa Express, make sure your flight is actually arriving at Malpensa.

If you are flying into MXP instead, see our guide to travelling from Malpensa Airport to Milano Centrale by train.

From Milano Centrale back to Linate Airport

The reverse journey follows the same basic logic.

From Milano Centrale, take the M2 to Sant'Ambrogio and change to the M4 toward Linate Aeroporto.

Do not leave the station based on the assumption that there will be a direct airport train from Centrale. That is the familiar setup for Malpensa, not Linate.

Before leaving for the airport, check the current ATM service status and allow extra time for:

  • the metro transfer;
  • walking through Centrale;
  • possible service disruption;
  • airport security;
  • baggage check-in if required.

For an early flight, also check whether the metro is operating at the time you need to travel. ATM operates an NM4 night service when the metro itself is not running, but schedules and stops should be checked for your specific date.

Which option is best?

There is no need to overcomplicate this journey.

If you are going to central Milan, take the M4.

If you are going to Milano Centrale, take the M4 and connect to the M2.

If you have heavy luggage, are travelling as a group or need a door-to-door journey, compare that with taking a taxi.

The biggest planning mistake is simply confusing Milano Centrale with central Milan.
