If you bought your train ticket online and think you may not make it to the station in time, check whether your ticket can be changed to another train on the same day and make the change before the scheduled departure. For tickets that are automatically activated at departure, changes may no longer be possible once the ticket has been activated.

If you have already missed your train, whether you can take the next one depends on the type of ticket you have.

Check Your Ticket First

The first thing to check is whether your ticket is linked to a specific train or remains valid for a certain period.

High-Speed and Intercity Trains

  • Trenitalia High-Speed and Intercity: Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca and Intercity tickets are often linked to a specific train and departure time. If you miss your train, you may need to change your ticket or buy a new one, depending on the fare conditions.
  • Italo: Italo tickets are also subject to the conditions of the fare purchased. You cannot automatically use the ticket on the next train.

Trenitalia Regional Tickets

Trenitalia offers different types of regional tickets, so do not assume that every regional ticket can be used on another train.

If you bought a Digital Regional Ticket (BDR) online, it is automatically activated at the scheduled departure time of the train you selected when booking and is valid for that train. Once the ticket has been activated, it can no longer be changed. If you think you may miss the train, make any permitted change to another train on the same day before the scheduled departure.

A paper Regional ticket generally needs to be validated before departure and is valid for 4 hours from validation. Within this validity period, you can travel on other trains on the same route, subject to specific regional exceptions.

Trenord Tickets

Trenord tickets are generally valid for 6 hours from the departure time shown on the ticket.

For cross-border tickets between Lombardy and Switzerland, the validity period is 4 hours.

Depending on the ticket and route, you may therefore be able to take a later train within the ticket's validity period. Always check the conditions of your specific ticket before travelling.

Malpensa Express Tickets

Malpensa Express tickets are valid on the selected travel date, rather than being restricted to one specific departure.

If you miss your original Malpensa Express departure, you can generally take another Malpensa Express train on the same day, subject to the ticket conditions.

What If You Miss Your Connection Because of a Delay?

Missing a connection because your first train was delayed is different from simply arriving late at the station.

If a railway delay causes you to miss your connecting train, do not immediately buy a new ticket. Instead, speak to railway staff and show your original ticket and information about the delayed train.

The railway company may have specific arrangements for passengers who miss a connection because of a delay.

In Short

Missing your train does not always mean you need to buy a new ticket. Whether you can take the next train depends on your ticket type and its validity.

If you are running late, check your ticket conditions before boarding another train. If your ticket allows changes, make the change before the original departure time.
