From Bologna Airport to Bologna Centrale: Is 7 Minutes Really Enough?

Bologna Airport is one of those airports that looks almost too convenient on paper.

The Marconi Express connects Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) with Bologna Centrale in about seven and a half minutes. If you are landing in Bologna and continuing by train to Florence, Rome, Milan or another Italian city, that sounds ideal.

But there is an important distinction:

seven minutes is the ride from the airport station to Bologna Centrale. It is not the total time between landing and standing on the platform for your next train.

You still need to get off the aircraft, collect luggage if necessary, walk through the terminal, reach the Marconi Express station and then find your onward platform once you arrive at Bologna Centrale.

So yes, the airport-to-station connection is exceptionally fast. You just need to plan the rest of the transfer realistically.

Bologna Airport to Bologna Centrale transfer

The easiest way to Bologna Centrale: Marconi Express

For most travellers going directly from Bologna Airport to Bologna Centrale, the Marconi Express is the obvious first choice.

It is a dedicated monorail connecting:

Bologna Airport → Lazzaretto → Bologna Centrale

The journey from the airport to the central station takes roughly 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Current service normally operates from 05:40 until midnight, with trains running more frequently during busy periods. At peak times, departures can be around every seven minutes; at quieter times, the interval can be closer to 15 minutes.

The current standard fare is €12.80 one way or €23.30 return.

You can buy a ticket before travelling, use the ticket machines at the station or simply use a compatible contactless card or payment device at the gate.

That makes the transfer particularly easy if you have just landed and do not want to spend time working out local buses or ticket machines.

Where do you find the Marconi Express at Bologna Airport?

After arriving at BLQ, follow the signs for Marconi Express.

The airport station is connected directly to the terminal building. From the arrivals area, signs lead passengers up to the first floor and then through the covered walkway toward the station.

You do not need to leave the airport complex and search for a separate railway station.

This is one of the reasons the transfer feels simpler than some other Italian airport connections.

If you have a mobile ticket or are using contactless payment, you can go straight through the gates.

Where does it arrive at Bologna Centrale?

The Marconi Express terminates at Bologna Centrale, but it does not drop you directly beside every mainline train platform.

Its station access is on the Via de' Carracci side of Bologna Centrale.

Once you arrive, you still need to walk into the main railway station and find your onward train.

This matters because Bologna Centrale is a large station. Some high-speed platforms, especially the underground Bologna Centrale AV platforms, can take several minutes to reach.

If you have an onward Frecciarossa or Italo train, do not treat the moment the Marconi Express arrives as the moment you are ready to board.

Allow time to:

  • walk into the station;
  • check the departure boards;
  • confirm your train number;
  • find the correct platform;
  • reach the platform with luggage.

For first-time visitors, a little extra time here is much more useful than trying to save five minutes at the airport.

High-speed trains at Bologna Centrale station

How much time should you leave before an onward train?

This is the part that matters most if Bologna is only a connection point.

A flight lands at 10:00. Your train leaves Bologna Centrale at 10:40.

At first glance, the seven-minute Marconi Express journey makes that look possible.

In practice, it is extremely tight.

Your actual journey looks more like this:

Aircraft lands → disembark → passport control if applicable → baggage claim → walk to Marconi Express → wait for next service → 7.5-minute ride → walk through Bologna Centrale → find platform → board train

Any one of those stages can take longer than expected.

For that reason, I would not plan an airport-to-train connection around the Marconi Express journey time alone.

If you are arriving on a flight and catching a long-distance train from Bologna Centrale, give yourself a realistic buffer, particularly if:

  • you have checked luggage;
  • you are arriving from outside the Schengen Area;
  • your flight is in the evening;
  • you are unfamiliar with Bologna Centrale;
  • you have a restricted train ticket that cannot easily be changed.

The exact buffer depends on your situation, but the important point is simple: the monorail is fast; airports are not always predictable.

Is the Marconi Express expensive for such a short ride?

This is probably the biggest downside.

At €12.80 one way, the fare is relatively high for a journey lasting less than ten minutes.

You are paying for speed and convenience rather than distance.

For someone travelling alone and connecting to a train, that can still be worthwhile. You get a direct airport-to-station transfer with no road traffic and very little navigation.

If several people are travelling together, however, it can be worth comparing the total cost with a taxi.

A taxi may also make more sense if:

  • you have a lot of luggage;
  • you are travelling with young children;
  • you need to reach a hotel rather than the train station;
  • mobility is a concern;
  • several passengers can split the fare.

There is no need to decide based only on the cheapest ticket. The right question is whether you value a predictable station connection or door-to-door convenience.

What about the bus?

Bologna Airport also has bus connections.

The most relevant alternative for travellers arriving late is Line Q.

During the night, when the Marconi Express monorail is not operating, Line Q connects the airport with Bologna Centrale. Bologna Airport currently lists the night airport-to-station journey at around 30 minutes.

If your flight arrives close to midnight, check the actual service running that night rather than assuming you will still catch the monorail.

This is particularly important if your flight is delayed.

You may land before midnight but reach the transport area after the final Marconi Express departure.

What if the Marconi Express is not running?

Like any transport system, the monorail occasionally closes for maintenance or experiences disruption.

The useful part is that when the Marconi Express is suspended, a replacement shuttle bus is normally activated.

Replacement buses connect the airport, Lazzaretto and Bologna Centrale, and existing Marconi Express tickets can be used when the replacement service is operating.

This is worth checking on the day of travel, especially if you have a tight train connection.

If the monorail is down, your airport-to-station journey will take longer than the normal seven-minute ride.

That is another reason not to build an itinerary with almost no buffer.

Can you use your Marconi Express ticket on Bologna city transport?

A useful detail that many visitors miss is that current Marconi Express tickets also include 75 minutes of travel on TPER urban transport.

That can be useful if Bologna Centrale is not your final destination.

For example, if you are staying elsewhere in Bologna, you may be able to continue from the station using the city's urban transport network without immediately buying another local ticket, subject to the ticket's validity conditions.

If you are simply changing trains at Bologna Centrale, you probably will not need this benefit.

Should you take a taxi instead?

A taxi is not automatically faster.

The Marconi Express avoids road traffic and gets you between the airport and station in a predictable amount of time.

A taxi becomes more attractive when the train station is not your real destination.

If you are going to:

  • a hotel in central Bologna;
  • accommodation outside the station area;
  • a destination difficult to reach by public transport;

then taking a taxi directly from the airport may save you a transfer.

For a traveller whose next step is a train from Bologna Centrale, however, the Marconi Express is usually the cleaner option.

Why Bologna Centrale matters for onward travel

Bologna Centrale is one of the most important rail hubs in Italy.

High-speed trains connect Bologna with cities including:

  • Florence
  • Rome
  • Milan
  • Venice
  • Turin
  • Naples

That makes Bologna Airport especially useful for travellers who are not actually staying in Bologna.

You can land at BLQ, take the Marconi Express to Centrale and continue your journey by rail without crossing the city.

Bologna Centrale back to Bologna Airport

The return journey is just as straightforward.

Follow the signs for the Marconi Express from inside Bologna Centrale toward the Via de' Carracci side of the station.

From there, the monorail takes you directly back to the airport.

Do not plan your departure around the seven-minute ride alone.

You still need to allow time for:

  • walking through Bologna Centrale;
  • waiting for the next departure;
  • reaching the airport terminal;
  • airline check-in if required;
  • security;
  • boarding.

The Marconi Express itself is fast. Missing a flight because you treated seven minutes as the entire airport transfer would be a much more expensive mistake.

The main thing to remember

Getting from Bologna Airport to Bologna Centrale is unusually easy.

The Marconi Express really does cover the rail journey in only a few minutes.

But if you are planning an onward train, the number that matters is not 7 minutes.

It is the full time from:

your aircraft door → airport terminal → Marconi Express → Bologna Centrale → your actual train platform.

Plan for that journey rather than the headline travel time, and Bologna can be one of the easiest airport-to-rail connections in Italy.
